This project stayed on the back burner for most of the summer, but the fig tunnel is finally nearing completion. Its success is entirely thanks to Landon, who has worked doggedly to get this thing built before our grant deadline in December. With the end walls up and the frame in place, it only takes a little imagination to picture the tunnel brimming with robust fig trees.
The project was also helped along by some of our Headhouse colleagues, who saved us time by kindly schlepping fig trees to market. Hurley’s Nursery and Tree Authority (Hasan of Green Zameen) sold us about half of the beautiful trees that we’ll plant next spring. Another good chunk came from Threefold Farm in Mechanicsburg, PA and a February fig workshop hosted by the Philadelphia Orchard Project. From funding to fig trees, this tunnel was made possible by the incredible community of growers in our region and the generous support of the FruitGuys Community Fund. Collaboration makes fresh figs taste all the sweeter.
