Unintentional Intercropping

With all this wet weather, we haven’t had many opportunities to get into the fields to do some proper weeding. It’s hard to kill weeds when their roots are constantly being replanted and replenished by life-giving rains, and the wet soil makes our weeding tools less effective. Some weeds are now so big that our only option is hand-pulling–the tactic used to tame the lush field of purslane that engulfed our Brussels sprout transplants (pictured above).

We can also blame the rainfall for the recent uptick in disease around the farm. Most things will probably pull through, but the cucumbers are just about ready to hang up their vines for the season. If you’re curious about the relationship between rainfall and disease, check out this fun video from MIT.

Don’t let my griping mislead you, though. We’ve been relatively lucky–other farms in the region are dealing with much more severe weather and bigger rain totals. But thanks to great customers like you, we’ll all continue to weather the storm.
