Some changes we make around here mark big shifts in the way we farm: the purchase of our Celli spader and construction of our high tunnel, for instance. Most changes, however, are small and incremental, but no less important to the overall success of our operation.
The switch from a 7′ medium-weight row cover to a 10′ lightweight cover in our brassica plantings falls into the latter camp. Both types of cover effectively protected our kale, broccoli, mustard greens, etc. from all of their mortal enemies (flea beetles, cabbage worms, harlequin bugs, to name a few). The heavier cover, however, created a hotter environment that could stress out our young seedlings. Not so with the lightweight version.
Thanks to our new row cover, we have happy kale plants ready for harvest earlier than usual. The good results have also motivated us to experiment more with spring brassicas. If all goes well, you can expect spring kale and broccoli later into the summer, plus some spring cabbage. Our kitchen will surely see some of this cabbage and snap pea salad come June 2018!
