The strawberries may be winding down, but the black raspberries and the blueberries are eager to assume their spot on the market table.
We find that both fruits are less susceptible to insect and disease pressure than their berry brethren–a surefire way to befriend a farmer. The biggest challenge with the blueberries (as you may have guessed from the picture) is bird damage. A fellow grower down the road uses one of those charming blow-up guys you see at car dealerships to scare away the winged menace. T-posts and netting may be just as effective, but they aren’t nearly as fun. Not even close.
