Dream Fig

These two pictures have nothing to do with each other, but I figured it’s been a little while since I included a picture of Frankie. She’s getting so big!

You know what else is getting big? Our experimental figs in the greenhouse (see photo on right). A few years back, Landon and I hatched up a plan to build a high tunnel and stuff it full of fig trees. We both adore fresh figs, but our outdoor trees always fair poorly during our chilly Zone 6 winters. Protected growing space could potentially provide the additional warmth needed to stave off the cold damage.

Before investing in the tunnel infrastructure, we decided to install a 3-tree test plot in the back of our current greenhouse. We limited the planting space to prevent the trees from getting too unwieldy, but they seem to have figured out a way. If we move forward with the tunnel plan, we’ll shrink their containers even further to minimize pruning. We’re not ready to cut any checks yet, but we’re feeling hopeful about our sweet fig dreams.
