Double Duty

This year, we’re making our tomato beds due double duty as lettuce beds. The photo to the left shows the tomato transplants down the center flanked by lettuce on either side. We’ll harvest the lettuce this week before it gets crowded out by the tomato foliage.

Generally, we don’t do too much intercropping on the farm–the management challenges tend to outweigh the gains. But we were pleased with the results in the tunnel, and I’m now daydreaming about sticking some early lettuce heads in next year’s pea bed. Stay tuned!
