With all the peas picked and this season’s strawberries in our rear-view mirror, it’s really starting to feel like summer. The recent solstice and face-melting temperatures also go a long way in setting the scene. In just a few weeks time, the summer veggies will make their grand entrance, like some A-list movie star in a much-anticipated summer blockbuster.
Until then, we just have to be patient and hope the weather is kind. No matter how many hours I spend staring at them, the tomatoes won’t ripen any faster. No one can coax those prima donnas from their trailer before they’re ready (since I insist on sticking with this hackneyed movie metaphor).
Fortunately, the supporting cast is pretty awesome, too. Our onions–last season’s biggest disaster–our making a comeback in 2015, and we’ll have them on our market table in no time. Regardless of how much special attention we lavish on the tomatoes, this farm is a true ensemble performance.
