Each season, we learn something new about navigating the unique needs of spring production. Last year’s lessons were all about our veggie transplants. Our greenhouse was too cold and our germination mix too low in fertility to start happy, healthy plants. We made some tweaks over the course of last season, and we’re now churning out some robust looking seedlings.
This season, it’s the direct-seeded crops (cilantro, carrots, and beets) that are making us scratch our heads. The dry weather has created soil conditions inhospitable to germination, and we’re scrambling to get the right mix of irrigation and row cover to prevent the soil from crusting. Next season is sure to bring some changes, but until then, we’ll just have to make do.
As Landon reminded me though, there is a silver lining to these slower May markets… we have lots of downtime to catch up with all of you. Please don’t hesitate to stop by and chat! We’re eager to hear about your winter travels, home gardening projects, summer vacations, and everything in between.
